Thinking inside the box

With batteries installed and commissioned, and Charge Offshore’s Aquarius Eco factory tested and ready to go offshore, all that’s left to finalise is how e-Ginny will be powered up shoreside.

Existing grid infrastructure is, right now, far behind the curve of where it needs to be - nowhere near strong enough to charge even a relatively small-scale electric vessel like e-Ginny. This is where Fellten steps in.

The electrification specialist’s Charge Qube mobile battery energy storage system (BESS) is designed to be transported directly to where charging power is needed most. You can see here the BESS being conveniently unloaded right next to e-Ginny at Goodchild Marine Services’ dock in Great Yarmouth.

Fellten’s range of systems, from the CQ160 (160kWh) up to their planned flagship 1mWh model, are already being used by multiple emergency services, councils and a significant UK leasing company. Spotting an urgent need for onshore vessel charging support, the technology has now been repurposed for the marine sector.

Here,  the modular 450kWh system, CQ450, is providing ultra rapid charging up to 240kw to help charge e-Ginny while docked. This means that e-Ginny now has increased access to critical overnight charging back in port during commissioning and sea trials, ahead of deployment with Artemis Technologies' grid-connected charger.

With the UK’s energy grid not yet up to snuff, innovative off-grid solutions like Fellten’s Charge Qube are a real saving grace for the transition to marine electrification.
