In a major new update, e-Ginny’s officially powered up for the first time!
With commissioning is now underway at Goodchild Marine by Mecal (on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency), we’ve started bringing all systems online to see how the batteries, propulsion, controls and onboard systems performs as one.
After months of design, strip-out, rebuild and installation, this is the moment where it all comes together.
Of course, as with any first-of-its-kind project, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.
We’ve made the decision to remove a portion of the batteries (around 500kW in total). While that brings e-Ginny to just shy of 3MW of onboard energy storage, it’s a change driven by something we’ve been tracking closely throughout the project: weight.
In short, we essential systems like cabinets, wiring and all the supporting infrastructure needed to make a fully electric CTV operational were heavier than expected. It’s a classic prototype challenge - no matter how much you plan, the reality of integrating new systems (particularly in a retrofit) always comes with unknown variables.
Now with a fresh focus on efficiency and weight optimisation, removing the excess battery capacity may not actually be much of a problem. The overall reduction in weight actually offsets the lower available energy capacity, meaning range and performance will hardly be affected at all (we’re still doing the math on that one).
With support from Corvus Energy and Danfoss, the commissioning is progressing nicely and systems are coming to life. Soon, our attention will turn to the next big moment - bringing e-Ginny to Southampton for Seawork in June.
We can’t wait to show her off to the world!
