Tidal Transit deploys Fellten’s mobile battery technology to charge electric fleet

Marine electrification specialist Tidal Transit has deployed Charge Qube, a battery energy storage system (BESS) from Fellten, to support onshore charging for e-Ginny, the company’s landmark retrofit electric crew transfer vessel (E-CTV).

This announcement marks a significant milestone for Tidal Transit as the company accelerates the transition away from diesel for offshore wind operations and maintenance fleets.

Charge Qube (CQ) is already utilised in sectors where instant, reliable access to power is critical, such as NHS Blood and Transplant, Automotive OEMs (BEV programmes) and EV fleet depots. The team also works closely with multiple emergency services, councils and a significant UK leasing company, all of which are using the CQ technology to address the persistent challenge of grid constraints.

Recognising a similar need for maritime as the sector quickly adopts electrification, the technology has now been repurposed for use in ports and docks where demand for high-power charging is rising faster than onshore grid infrastructure can support.

The Fellten range offers mobile battery energy storage solutions ranging from the CQ160 (160kWh) up to their planned flagship 1mWh. Tidal chose the CQ450 model, which deploys 450kWh of electricity storage in a mobile, modular battery system designed to be transported directly to where charging power is needed most. The system can be relocated to any shoreside location, offering ultra rapid charging up to 240kW to charge e-Ginny while docked.

The innovative and novel application for mobile energy storage is helping overcome one of the biggest barriers to marine electrification: a lack of sufficient grid capacity at portside locations. By introducing portable, containerised battery storage, Tidal Transit and Fellten  are helping bridge the gap in vessel charging infrastructure and supporting the wider shift to electrification across the commercial marine sector.

Tidal Transit’s e-Ginny project has seen the full transformation of a diesel-powered vessel, Ginny Louise, into a fully electric CTV, alongside development of critical offshore charging infrastructure. Combined with the new onshore charging solution from Fellten, Tidal Transit is accelerating progress towards electrifying offshore crew transport and reducing the operational carbon footprint of the offshore wind sector.
